About the Instructor
As you already know, my name is Gajan Balan. I’m a photographer and director based in Toronto. My visuals are an exercise in world building that moves across portraiture, fashion, street, and documentary. My work has garnered multiple awards, publications, and galleries but my primary focus remains on highlighting humanistic stories from around the world. Namely those that draw inspiration from my culture and heritage. My goal is to develop compelling stories that can inspire the next generation of creatives.
I have been travelling across India for many years and it has fundamentally shifted my view of photography. But more than the imagery, I’ve come to value the human interactions with each expedition. This is what will I will be championing throughout the workshop. With the help of 2 other amazing instructors, I’ll look to bring you into a world of photography where you build a genuine connection with your subjects and grow outside of your comfort zone. The goal is to create striking moments while being able to speak to the experience at an authentic level.
Workshop Itinerary
Chennai
Guests will arrive in Chennai by the morning of September 20th, kicking off the trip with a group lunch before a light excursion to settle in before an action-packed second day.
Day two will be a dynamic mix of experiences, keeping us on the move and ready to capture stories wherever they unfold. Day three starts early with a deep dive into Chennai’s bustling markets, followed by lunch and a short break before a surprise shoot you won’t want to miss. Get ready for an adventure!
Varanasi
Our second stop on this workshop takes us to the sacred city of Varanasi for a three-day intensive like no other. Here, we’ll immerse ourselves in the most religious strip in India, capturing its raw energy and timeless traditions. The goal is to become documentarians. We’ll embed ourselves into the heart of this community to tell its stories with depth and authenticity.
Beyond photography, guests will take on assignments designed to challenge their perspectives and push their creative boundaries. This isn’t just about taking photos; it’s about discovering the unseen, crafting compelling narratives, and seeing Varanasi through a storyteller’s lens.
Kolkata
The final leg of our journey takes us to the City of Joy: Kolkata, where we’ll spend four days weaving through its bustling markets and hidden alleys. This vibrant city offers a rich, dynamic backdrop for street photography, inviting us to capture its warmth, chaos, and charm. From the lively flower markets to the intense world of Kushti wrestlers, every corner holds a story waiting to be told.
But this isn’t just about witnessing Kolkata—it’s about experiencing it in its rawest form. We want to push creative boundaries, challenge perspectives, and ensure this leg of the trip exceeds expectations in every way. Get ready to be surprised, inspired, and fully immersed.
Please note: a detailed itinerary with day-by-day breakdowns will be provided to guests who have paid their deposit.
